    • Luxury Goose Down Comforters: a product review

Choosing down bedding can be a complex process due to the number of options available.  There are so many things to consider:

      • What's the difference between down and feathers?
      • Will the comforter cause allergies?
      • Are they easy to keep clean?
      • How long with my goose down comforter last?
      • If I do suffer from allergies - can I buy an alternative down comforter?

There are so many options in bedding that making the right decision for you can be a hard one. Feathers or Polyester? Baffle or Sewn Through? Soft or Firm?

These are just a few of the questions you will encounter when you start shopping and it is very easy to quickly become confused when faced with the hundreds of different products in the marketplace.

The filling materials in our goose down comforters & pillows come from across the globe including Hungarian Goose Down, Siberian Goose Down & Canadian Goose Down.   Down is a soft fluffy cluster found beneath the feathers and it doesn't have any quill, like a feather does.  So nothing can poke through the outer covering and stick into you which is what happens with cheaper 'feather' comforters.  The down is harvested from specially bred geese and the birds are safely released to go off and grow more down.   Sort of like a sheep being shorn for its wool.   What a life!

The down is then put through a rigorous cleaning procedure making it hypoallergenic - which means SUPER clean - before it is put inside its cover.  This is where the term 'Thread Count' comes in.

      Thread Count

A comforter's thread count, or the number of threads woven per square inch, indicates its quality, durability and feel. A higher thread count means it has a tighter weave, usually creating a smoother, more luxurious touch. A higher thread count can also help keep fill from poking through and dirt out.

      - then you have the construction of the comforter.

      Construction
If a comforter's fill shifts it can create empty pockets with little or no warmth. That's where the comforter construction becomes important.
Baffle Box Construction uses sewn-in cloth "walls" to keep fill in place.
Sewn-Through Box Construction is created by sewing horizontal and vertical stitches into the top and bottom layers of a comforter. This creates individual compartments which prevent fill from clumping.
Channel Construction is similar to Sewn-Through Box Construction in that horizontal or vertical columns are sewn into the fabric to create compartments which prevent the fill from shifting.
A Gusset is a construction technique that creates outer side walls to secure a comforter's top and bottom layers together. This allows for it to appear more lofty and full.

All of this work leads finally to a top quality, luxurious goose down comforter or mattress pad.  Sleep ON goose down is just as luxurious as sleeping UNDER goose down.

One of our best selling items is the DORCHESTER 800 Fill Power DOWN BATISTE COMFORTER, which sells for between $440.00 to $900.00.  Comparable comforters sell for at least $900 to $1300 making our product very economical as well as beautiful.

So come along and browse through our online store and buy safely and securely at Luxury Goose Down Bedding.
